Jameis Winston's hometown to have 'Jameis Winston Day' in July

To commemorate the achievements of 2013 Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston, Winston’s home town has scheduled a celebration in his honor or July 5.

According to Al.com, the cities of Bessemer, Ala., Winston’s hometown, and nearby Hueytown will issue a proclamation declaring July 5 as “Jameis Winston Day.” The City of Hueytown will present the key to the city to Winston and the city also “plans to affix two permanent signs” to honor Winston. One of those signs will be placed at Hueytown High School, Winston’s alma mater.

The day will culminate with a presentation for Winston, who won the BCS National Championship with Florida State as a redshirt freshman, at his old high school stadium.

Hueytown city council member Fran Zinnerman told Al.com that Winston’s recent off-the-field incidents – the 2013 rape allegations and the April shoplifting incident – had no impact on the city’s decision for the ceremony.

“None of the accusations or charges against Winston had an impact on this decision” Zinnerman said. “We were actually scheduling this ceremony when it was convenient for Jameis to get home after the baseball season. None of that stuff had any bearing on our decision to honor Jameis. We wanted to recognize him as a Heisman Trophy winner, a graduate of Hueytown High and a resident of Hueytown. That’s why he is being recognized.”

The Mayor of Hueytown, the City Council, and other local and state officials are expected to be in attendance for the free event.

“After he won the Heisman and he led Florida State to the championship we knew that we would do something to recognize that,” Zinnerman said. “That was a great accomplishment.”

Hueytown football coach Mark Stephens said that the school also plans to retire Winston’s No. 8 football jersey at some point in the future.
