This year’s World Cup has been full of surprises and excitement. Perhaps it’s the excellent design of the Brazuca ball that's helping everyone forget the nightmares they had about the Jabulani ball four years ago. Maybe it's the way the underdogs seem to have the advantage so far – whatever the reason, the games have been interesting and several records have been broken during the group stage.
For the first time in nearly 20 years, every nation’s team scored a goal in the opening round – and those goals came from players wearing every jersey number save for one -- the No. 1.

Each team fields 23 players, wearing jerseys numbered 1 to 23. It's so surprise that no one wearing No. 1 has scored, because that shirt is saved for the goalkeepers (and teams most likely want them blocking goals; not scoring them).
The player picked for the number is in order of when the first goal for that jersey number was scored:
- ------
- Vrsajevic (Bosnia-Herzegovina)
- De Vrij (Netherlands)
- Cahill (Australia)
- Kolasinae (Bosnia-Herzegovina)
- Marcelo (Own goal; Brazil)
- Alexis (Chile)
- Marchisio (Italy)
- Van Persie (Netherlands)
- Neymar Jr. (Brazil)
- Oscar (Brazil)
- B. Wilfried (Ivory Coast)
- E. Valenica (Ecuador)
- Alonso (Spain)
- Beausejour (Chile)
- Rojo (Argentina)
- Mendzukic (Croatia)
- Mehmedi (Switzerland)
- Peralta (Mexico)
- Wijnaldum (Netherlands)
- Cavani (Uruguay)
- Samaris (Greece)
- Shaqiri (Switzerland)
