So, this happened early Thursday morning:
The tweet appeared on the Twitter account of former Kansas big man Joel Embiid shortly after 1 a.m. ET on Thursday morning — that's 10:10 p.m. Staples Center time — on the night before the 2014 NBA draft, and was deleted within minutes. The 7-foot Cameroonian center promptly did what any right-thinking 20-year-old would do — he blamed one of his buddies:
... and then got mad about it:
(In case you can't see them, that's four angry, red-faced emojis right there. The surest sign that someone's majorly cheesed off!)
It is, of course, very possible that Embiid's telling the truth, and that one of his pals decided to screw with his phone on the night before the most important event of his life, because, again: 20-year-olds. (If that's the case, then young Mr. Embiid might consider, um, discontinuing that particular friendship.) That said, given how things have unfolded for Embiid — with his foot injury and subsequent surgery likely scuttling his chances of being the Cleveland Cavaliers' choice with Thursday's No. 1 overall pick, and reports circulating that power agent Arn Tellem was limiting teams' access to Embiid's medical records in the interest of steering his client to a preferred destination — it's also at least the teensiest bit possible that this was a case of letting the genie out of the bottle a bit early.
If he slips, it sounds like the Los Angeles Lakers might still be interested in the potential two-way game-changer:
Both Yahoo Sports NBA columnist Marc J. Spears and DraftExpress' Jonathan Givony have Sam Hinkie's Philadelphia 76ers pulling the trigger on Embiid at No. 3, striking a similar note to the one the Sixers played last June in trading for the rights to injured Kentucky big man Nerlens Noel on draft night. If they have it wrong, though, and if the next couple of teams decide they'd prefer to go in a different direction, Lakers fans could find themselves ready for a surprising celebration:
