Germany and the U.S. played a scoreless first half as the rain came down in Recife, Brazil. The Germans maintained the majority of possession, but looked suspect in defense the few times the U.S. were able to attempt an attack. In fact, Germany's best defender of the first half was the referee, who took down Jermaine Jones as he attempt to charge into the box.
Both Jones and the ref were watching the ball, so they didn't know they were in each other's path. Still, the ref could have denied a scoring chance for Jones, who scored the U.S.'s first goal in their 2-2 draw with Portugal. And to continue the shocking decisions from match officials at this World Cup, the referee did not send himself off for this offense.
A FIFA investigation should follow.
