To be honest, I thought the fascination with Johnny Manziel's off-the-field life would quiet down once he got to the NFL. Most NFL fans are pretty serious. Mostly they care about one thing: Are you good at football? The rest doesn't matter all that much.
Alas, that's not the case, at least so far. Manziel's every Vegas trip and inflatable swan ride has been dissected until it's dead. Maybe this is just how Manziel's career is going to play out. The Browns rookie quarterback certainly doesn't seem to care about being seen in public, although one NFL legend says maybe he should.
Former 49ers superstar Joe Montana weighed in on Manziel to NFL Network. Maybe that shouldn't be a surprise, since everyone with a microphone attached to their lapel has been asked how Manziel should act. Montana said on "NFL Total Access" that his coach Bill Walsh gave him some advice early in his career, and he'd pass the same along to Manziel.
"I go back to an old saying Bill Walsh told me after we won our first Super Bowl," Montana said, via NFL.com. "I was going everywhere and trying to do everything. He called me in and said, 'I want to tell you one thing, I understand what you're doing, we may never get back to another Super Bowl. Just remember this, the less people see you, the more they want to see you.'
"And so basically he was saying, 'It's OK to do some things but try to cut it back and don't forget about football.' Because that's what got you there and that is what's going to keep you there. So you have to make sure you spend the time on football as much as getting out and about."
That definitely worked for Montana. He won four Super Bowls and is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. He also has a lot quieter personality than Manziel, which might have made heeding that advice a little easier.
One thing is clear, however. We still have a month before training camp for Manziel's exploits to end up on social media, and everyone to decide how he should be acting.
