More than five months after being arrested for felony marijuana possession, South Florida starting cornerback Kenneth Durden has decided to transfer.
Durden told the Tampa Bay Times on Sunday evening that he will transfer to FCS Youngstown State and will be eligible for the 2014 season. Durden, a redshirt junior, is expected to have two seasons of eligibility remaining to play for the Penguins.
Durden started 11 games for the Bulls last season, registering 32 tackles and one interception. He was expected to be a leader in USF’s secondary moving forward before his arrest on January 18.
The arrest took place after USF police received a complaint of possible drug use at Durden’s on-campus residence. The officer smelled an odor of marijuana and Durden “acknowledged to having the substance in his room.”
Durden pulled out a bag of marijuana that contained 21.7 grams. More than 20 grams of marijuana is a third-degree felony. He was indefinitely suspended by USF head coach Willie Taggart following the arrest.
Per the Times, Durden was still listed on the Bulls’ roster this spring, but Taggart said on the first day of spring practice that the Durden had things “to take care of” that are “much bigger than football.”
Durden did not participate in spring practice and when reached by the Times Sunday evening, Taggart said he was “not sure” if Durden would have had the chance to rejoin the Bulls in the fall.
Durden was a Rivals three-star recruit in the class of 2011 coming out of Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Ga. He committed to the Bulls over scholarship offers from Cincinnati, Louisville, Mississippi State and Central Florida, among others.
