Vin Scully announces return to Dodgers for 66th season in 2015

No matter the outcome of the ballgame Tuesday night, Dodger Stadium was going to be a happy place: 86-year-old Hall of Famer Vin Scully announced he intends to return for a 66th season broadcasting the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The park went up for grabs in the second inning after the stadium's video board showed a "press conference" where players Hyun-jin Ryu, Yasiel Puig and Justin Turner made the announcement in three different languages before cutting to Scully waving to the crowd from the press box. He also hugged his wife, Sandi, to celebrate the announcement.

Of course, it was a rare occasion for Angelenos to see Scully at all, considering the ongoing programming dispute involving the team's new SportsNet LA channel, which still can't be viewed by most of the area. Scully's still calling the games, though, just as he has since 1950 when the team played in Brooklyn, N.Y., U.S.A.

Via the Associated Press:

A decision about Scully's future has become an annual rite of passage in recent years as he evaluates his health and his family's wishes in considering whether he wants to continue.

''God willing, I will be back next year,'' he said in a statement released by the team. ''Naturally there will come a time when I have to say goodbye, but I've soul-searched and this is not the time.''

It seems like these decisions have been made easier for Scully in recent seasons ever since the new ownership took over in 2012. So, thanks, Magic Johnson and other benefactors.

Here's a longer version of the contrived-but-in-a-good-way announcement that got much of the team involved:

And just to make sure there was something swell for Scully to call, the Dodgers beat the Braves 8-4 behind a pair of two-run home runs by Matt Kemp (still not traded!) and four hits by Puig.
