Andrelton Simmons amazes with barehanded play

This is the kind of play that Ozzie Smith used to make frequently at shortstop, especially when he was with the San Diego Padres and played most of his games on a grass field at Jack Murphy Stadium. The reflexes required on Andrelton Simmons of the Atlanta Braves in order to make it happen are off the charts. Long arms help, too. Nimble fingers. Ligaments with give. Knuckles of alacrity. The fingertips of Hercules. Eyes that can see in the dark.

In the top of he fifth inning Monday afternoon, Simmons helped keep Will Venable of the San Diego Padres off base with a spectacularly amazing supercalifragilisticexpialidocious barehanded grab and throw to first. The Braves won 2-0, thanks to defense like that, Ervin Santana striking out 11 and a home run by Evan Gattis.

Simmons still hasn't made a play like this:

Then again, nobody has (and had it recorded on video) except for The Wizard. But he's only 24 years old.
