According to Yahoo Sports’ own Rand Getlin, Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston has purchased a “disability and ‘loss of value’ policy.” That policy provides Winston, the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner, with “$8 million to $10 million in insurance coverage.”
Although other returning Heisman winners have purchased “total permanent disability” coverage in the past, Getlin reports that Winston is the first returning Heisman winner since former Oklahoma and current St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford to “purchase preseason loss of value coverage.”
Per Getlin:
“Winston’s policy is based on a projection that he will be selected in the top 10 of the 2015 NFL draft and would theoretically pay out if he fell out of the first round due to injury or illness.”
Winston’s father has said on many occasions that the family plans for his son to play two more football seasons and one more baseball season at FSU while he earns his degree. Despite this, Getlin reports that underclassmen “who purchase insurance policies as large as Winston’s” will “almost always enter the NFL draft following the season which they purchased coverage.”
Winston, who led the Seminoles to a BCS National Championship as a redshirt freshman in 2013, will be a redshirt sophomore in 2014 and would be eligible for the draft at season’s end. He threw for 4,057 yards and 40 touchdowns. He also ran for 219 yards and four additional touchdowns.
The Winston family has not commented on the report.
