Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles will report to training camp with a contract extension that will pay him significantly more than the $3.9 million he was scheduled to make in base salary this season, reported first by Fox Sports' Mike Garafolo and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Alex Smith has to be wondering when he'll get paid. Charles had two years left on his deal and has earned $18.1 million more in new money over the next four years, per reports. It was rumored he planned to stay away from camp, but the two sides — which had been talking previously — came together on a deal rather quickly.
Really, what choice did the Chiefs have? He and they both know he is the centerpiece of their offense, and if he had held out the team really had little leverage. Charles, you could argue, might even be more essential to the team's success than Smith.
Charles, 27, led the Chiefs last season in rushing with 259 carries for 1,287 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns, and also added 70 receptions for 693 yards and seven receiving scores.
Smith likely is the next contract mission the front office will have to tackle, but the team also will have pass rusher Justin Houston to be concerned about heading into the final year of his deal and could have to make some tough decisions on a few high-priced veterans at some point.
