If you’re even a semi-regular reader of Dr. Saturday, you know that it’s a common occurrence for teams to experiment with new uniforms and helmets, especially during the offseason. On Tuesday, Iowa State decided to throw its hat in the ring.
Cyclones head coach Paul Rhoads announced that his team will wear brand new helmets with a matte-finish for select games in 2014. Here’s what the helmets, equipped with the brand new Big 12 logo, will look like.
According to a release from the program, the team was in favor of trying something new and Rhoads was on board as well.
“I’m a traditionalist,” Rhoads said. “However, this helmet provides us a chance to test different designs while staying within the concept of our colors and brand.
The Cyclones are one of several schools in recent years to embrace the matte look and ISU Director of Equipment Operations Jon Sedgwick is happy with the way they turned out.
“The current helmet has a metallic, high-gloss look. The matte helmet is much different. It’s one of the newer trends out there. The players seem to like it and it’s not that much of a drastic change,” said Sedgwick.
It’s not immediately known when the Cyclones, who are coming off a 3-9 record in 2013, will debut the new lids. The team’s first opportunity will be in the season opener at home against North Dakota State on August 30.
