Wyoming safety Xavier Lewis suffers stroke, driven to hospital by teammate

Nov 1, 2014; Fresno, CA, USA; Wyoming Cowboys running back Joshua Tapscott (32) is congratulated by free safety Xavier Lewis (18) after scoring a touchdown against the Fresno State Bulldogs in the fourth quarter at Bulldog Stadium. The Cowboys defeated the Bulldogs 45-17. (Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports) Wyoming tight end Eric Nzeocha may have saved a teammate’s life on Wednesday night.

Nzeocha’s roommate, Cowboys safety Xavier Lewis, was having a stroke and Nzeocha was able to recognize the symptoms and drive Lewis to the hospital.

“Not only did (Nzeocha) notice what was wrong, he knew what to ask him,” Lewis’ father, Quentin Lewis, told the Casper Star-Tribune. “He asked him to talk. He asked him to try to write something down. He couldn’t do it. He took him to the hospital. He took him himself.”

After originally being taken by Nzeocha to Ivinson Memorial Hospital in Laramie, Lewis was “life-flighted to Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colorado, where he arrived and was admitted on midnight Thursday.”

Quentin Lewis said his son is “resting and recovering.”

“It’s a work in progress. We’ve got a lot of faith as a family,” Lewis said. “We’ve all bonded together, and Xavier’s coming through it. He’s progressing fast.”

Several of Lewis’ teammates and coaches have called to offer well wishes. Wideout Justin Berger even made the trip to Colorado to visit his teammate in the hospital.

Quentin Lewis said he’s “really appreciative” of the support from the program, but is most appreciative of Nzeocha.

“Eric Nzeocha saved him,” Quentin Lewis said. “You have to give him the most accolades ever. The kids that have now stood behind Xavier, to me as a parent, that’s the best thing in the world.”

The 6-foot, 195-pound Lewis has registered 23 tackles in two seasons with the Cowboys while Nzeocha caught eight passes for 65 yards this season. Wyoming went 4-8 this season.
