'Redskins' mentions declined 27 percent on NFL broadcasts this year

The Washington Redskins' name came under its sharpest assault in team history in 2014, with organizations mobilizing to condemn it as a slur. While a majority of Americans continue to believe the name should remain, broadcasters used the Redskins name 27 percent fewer times in 2014 than in 2013.

NFL announcers said "Redskins" 472 fewer times in 2014 than in 2013, according to a Deadspin analysis. The team's name was mentioned an average of 115 times per week, with the low point coming this past weekend against Dallas. Fox's team of Kevin Burkhart and John Lynch mentioned the word "Redskins" only 13 times the entire game.

Many broadcasters and media members have ceased using the name altogether, and always draw heat from Redskins fans when announcing their intentions publicly. Deadspin's stats seem to suggest that even those broadcasters who don't necessarily make their intentions known publicly are taking a quiet stand against the Redskins name.
