Auburn wide receiver D’haquille Williams won’t play in the Outback Bowl against 10-3 Wisconsin.
According to AuburnSports.com, Tigers head coach Gus Malzahn announced Monday that Williams, the team’s leading pass-catcher, broke unspecified team rules that will keep him out against the Badgers on New Year’s Day.
“I’m not getting into any details,” Malzahn said, per Al.com. “He’s just not going to play.”
Williams has reportedly been mulling whether or not to return for his senior season or to enter the NFL draft. Malzahn provided an update on that front, too.
“He is planning to come back to school next year,” Malzahn said.
Williams, who transferred to Auburn in January from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, caught 45 passes for 730 yards and five touchdowns for the 8-4 Tigers.
He arrived in Tampa, the site of the Outback Bowl, on Saturday – a day later than the rest of the team. He participated in practice on Sunday after missing many of the team’s previous bowl practices with a knee injury and an unspecified illness.
The Outback Bowl kicks off at noon on Jan. 1.
