Cardinals' Drew Stanton has sprained ACL, MCL; surgery not needed

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Drew Stanton has a sprained ACL and MCL, which he suffered against the St. Louis Rams, and could return at some point this season.

Stanton does not need surgery and is considered week to week. Arians said Stanton needs rest and rehab, which is extremely good news considering how much pain he appeared to be in after being sacked by the Rams' Aaron Donald. Stanton was unable to put weight on his right leg after the play, left the game and didn't return.

The Cardinals won their 11th game Thursday night and appear poised to make the playoffs, but they need to protect the division with the Seattle Seahawks — the Cardinals' Week 16 opponent — breathing down their necks.

Arians said the team is in the process of making the decision who will replace Stanton. Ryan Lindley replaced Stanton against the Rams, completing 4-of-10 passes for 30 yards in the win, over rookie Logan Thomas.

The Cardinals have played four quarterbacks this season now, following two injuries to starter Carson Palmer, who is out for the season with a torn ACL. Thomas completed 1-of-8 passes with an 81-yard touchdown pass against the Denver Broncos this season in his only action. Lindley was cut at the end of training camp and re-signed to the roster in Week 11 after Palmer was placed on injured reserve.

Arians said the team could add a quarterback to the roster, but more likely it would be someone on the practice squad. And no, Cardinals fans, Kurt Warner is not coming back to Arizona.

Stanton is on crutches and is also very unlikely, per Arians, to suit up against the Seahawks. Stanton tore his ACL in his rookie season with the Detroit Lions back in 2007, landing on injured reserve and missing the entire year. He also tore his ACL while covering a punt — seriously — as a freshman at Michigan State back in the bowl game against Nebraska following the 2003 season.

Arians left the door open for Stanton to return at some point, and if the Cardinals fail to win the West they'd be guaranteed to play on the opening weekend of the playoffs — on either Jan. 3 or 4.
