Kansas State coach Bill Snyder apologized for being in an ad for Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts (R) as Roberts is up for re-election on November 4.
"I made a mistake," Snyder said after the game via the Topeka Capital-Journal. "I'm not going to delve into exactly how everything happened, but I made a mistake and I embarrassed the university and that's my responsibility and that was my error.
"I'm not going to speak to it anymore right now, but that's my fault and nobody else's."
The ad shows Roberts and Snyder together and shows Snyder saying that he'll vote for Roberts, who is in a tough battle with Greg Orman (I) for the senate seat.
After the ad was aired, Kansas State president Kirk Schulz said in a memo that Snyder was unaware of his appearance in the ad and that university employees should not use their positions to influence voters. He said that the university asked for the ad to be removed but the Roberts campaign declined. According to the Capital-Journal, the campaign refuted the university's claim that it asked for the removal of the ad.
“Employees do not speak for the university when they endorse candidates,” Schulz wrote. “Employees should also avoid using their university affiliation in any endorsements or statements.”
Snyder said Saturday night that he wants the ad removed too, though since the election is Tuesday, there aren't many opportunities for it to air.
