Michigan State plays Wyoming on Saturday, a day that's also Michigan State WR Macgarrett Kings Jr.'s 21st birthday. Kings has a pretty straightforward birthday wish.
"I’m calling a punt return for Saturday," Kings said via MLive.com. "I’ve got to get in the end zone. I’ve got to score a couple of touchdowns, for my mom and my dad.’"
That's a prospect that's easier said than done. Kings hasn't exactly been finding the end zone on a regular basis. He hasn't scored a touchdown this season and his last TD in 2013 was against Iowa on October 5. It's been almost a year. He has four catches and six punt returns this season.
However, he's now listed as a co-starter at receiver for Michigan State and wants a chance to show off his skills. You only turn 21, once, right? What better way to guarantee a great birthday than with a trip to the end zone (and a Spartan win)?
"I'm not trying to sound cocky, but I know I’m a talented kid," Kings said, "So I try to work on everything and not take anything for granted. I know I can back it up, I just need a couple blocks on the punt return and I’m in there and then a good throw from Connor (Cook), and I’ll take it in there.’"
He should be careful on the punt return; we've all seen how bad things can happen
And while we appreciate Kings' attempt at humility and the desire to score for his parents, it's the type of birthday wish that probably goes best unsaid, at least publicly. Now if Kings doesn't score, he'll get questions about his pregame prediction. Had he not said anything and then scored a TD or two, he could fully play up the unexpected birthday present angle.
Now we'll all be waiting to see if his wish comes true. Michigan State kicks off against Wyoming at Noon ET.
