Mike Glennon took all the first-team reps at practice because starter Josh McCown is still dealing with a thumb injury. So Lovie Smith, whose insane desire to have a veteran quarterback led to some mistakes this offseason, will apparently be forced to turn to last year's all-rookie quarterback.
Smith told the media in Tampa that there's a "good chance" Glennon will start on Sunday, and the reporters including Ira Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune thought that it was probably a foregone conclusion:
Without a quick recovery by McCown, the journeyman veteran who has looked as overmatched as the rest of the Buccaneers this season, Glennon will be put back in the lineup. Last year Glennon was in a very difficult situation and still responded with a solid rookie season, throwing for 19 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Any rational team would have seen if the cheap, young quarterback could repeat that performance, but the Buccaneers signed McCown and blew a chance to develop their second-year quarterback with starter's reps through the offseason and training camp. It's quite possible Glennon isn't the team's long-term answer at quarterback, but it was an inexcusable mistake not to start this season by finding out.
This season hasn't been good for the Buccaneers, in many ways. Smith also announced that he's not sure offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford will be back with the team all season. Tedford has been dealing with an undisclosed medical issue since before the season started.
Tampa Bay is 0-3 and going nowhere. At least it will get a chance to see if Glennon can duplicate his rookie season. Then again, it's possible the team wouldn't stick with him even if he plays great. The head coach needs a veteran at quarterback, after all.
