landed Paul Chryst from Pitt, moved quickly, but that doesn’t mean Chryst didn’t have some serious competition to land the role.
Wisconsin’s coaching search, which ultimatelyAccording to an open records request filed by the Associated Press, 45 others applied for the opening, created when Gary Andersen left for Oregon State. Among those who applied were three men who you may not have heard of, but they have some unique qualifications that were probably tough for Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez to pass up.
One man, Jarrad Dann of Chandler, Ariz., listed himself as “The Man, The Myth, The Legend,” and claimed his “ridiculously good” ability at playing NCAA Football on XBOX 360 qualified him for the job. It’s hard to argue with him.
Elsewhere, a man from Racine, Wis., named Greg Miller listed his skills in “Madden ’92, Bill Walsh ’93, and NCAA Football ’96 and ’97.” He also has some coaching experience of his own.
“I have further successfully coached from my sofa every Saturday since 1987,” Miller, who said he was unemployed and living with his parents, wrote in his cover letter to Alvarez.
On top of that, Alvarez also turned down a very intriguing candidate in Arturo Bonomie, a YMCA coach for first graders, who would have accepted the position in a package deal with his wife.
“People tell me I can give one heck of a good pep talk on the sidelines and my wife makes a mean Gatorade,” Bonomie wrote.
Ultimately, Alvarez hired Chryst, a former Badgers quarterback and longtime assistant coach. Per the AP, Chryst “submitted his application on Dec. 12,” two days after Andersen’s departure.
Per ESPN.com, his cover letter in its entirety read:
This is my expression of interest of Head Football Coach at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My resume is attached. Thanks for your attention to this matter.
Personally, I would have gone with the guy whose wife makes the awesome Gatorade, but that’s just me.
