The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office will not file charges against USC cornerback Josh Shaw for his role in a dispute at his apartment last August, according to the Orange County Register.
Shaw told Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times last week that he and his girlfriend got into a verbal argument, she threw a lamp on the floor and walked out of the apartment. Neighbors heard the commotion and called 911. When he looked outside, he saw police cars, panicked, climbed over his balcony and fell about 20 feet, spraining both ankles.
Officers broke into the apartment and found no one there. Shaw's girlfriend returned later, but maintained no physical or sexual altercation had taken place.
A document obtained by the Orange County Register claimed “there is insufficient evident to prove that Mr. Shaw assaulted the victim in any manner.”
Following the incident, Shaw told USC officials he injured his ankles jumping off a balcony into a swimming pool to save his 7-year-old nephew. The story was almost immediately debunked, Shaw admitted he lied and he was indefinitely suspended.
USC athletic director Pat Haden told media Thursday the school would conduct its own internal investigation after the DA finished its investigation. Coach Steve Sarkisian has left the door open for Shaw, a returning starter and team captain, to return to the team.
USC has two regular season games remaining and if it wins out could play in the Pac-12 championship. It also will play in a bowl game.
