Remember that kid who sat in the front of class and would remind the teacher when they would forget to give a homework assignment? Apparently all of the Southampton players were that kid. Manager Ronald Koeman has revealed that the players refused a scheduled day off after eliminating Arsenal from the Capital One Cup on Tuesday. And his wife might not be pleased about that.
From Reuters:
"We planned Wednesday off after the Tuesday (victory over Arsenal) and Jose Fonte said 'Boss, we like to come to training tomorrow'," Koeman told reporters.
"I said 'but you have the day off, I planned things with my wife'," he smiled. "But we changed it. And I have never had that happen before. That means a lot to me, and that means a lot about the ambition of the players.
"We spoke to each other and said 'Ok, if you win against Queens Park Rangers then you get that day off for next week', and we hope to win on Saturday."
There was panic amongst fans and the press when the club lost manager Maurico Pochettino and sold off seven players over the summer, including Rickie Lambert, Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Calum Chambers. But Koeman and the other new faces brought in have worked out swimmingly thus far, putting Southampton second in the Premier League behind only Chelsea.
For the sake of the gaffer's personal life (and the enjoyable life of all other professional footballers) we can only hope they stop refusing those days off, though.
