The main event of the opening session of the 2014 Ryder Cup has been a tight battle. Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy halved the first three holes of their fourball match against Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley. On the fourth hole, however, the Europeans broke the ice.
Garcia found himself in the greenside bunker at the par-3 fourth when he holed out for a birdie that put all the pressure on Phil Mickelson to match from just off the green in the rough. Mickelson came up two feet short of a tying hole-out. The Europeans went 1 up in the match at the time, but the Americans have since pulled all square.
