Having stabbed himself in the heart by scoring a late equalizer in his first appearance against beloved former club Chelsea, Frank Lampard decided that the best way to numb the pain would be to just keep scoring goals. He scored the first and last goals of Man City's 7-0 Capital One Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday and celebrated them both, unlike the one he scored against Chelsea.
In the 86th minute of the match, a pitch invader jogged out to greet Lampard in the center circle without any security staff at the Etihad giving chase. He gave Lampard a hug and took a selfie with him before police strolled out to escort the fan away in handcuffs.
Between his three goals in two appearances and popularity with City's more brazen supporters, Lampard is making a bigger impact on the club than he might have expected when he joined on a six-month loan from NYCFC at the start of the season. As a result, his stay might end up being extended. Said City manager Manuel Pellegrini before the match (via the Guardian):
“Frank will stay until January because until January he doesn’t have anything to do in the United States because they are not working. In January we will see what is happening and we will make a decision then."
City will lose Yaya Toure for a few weeks from January into February for the African Cup of Nations, so Lampard's presence could be necessary depending on how the January transfer window shakes out. In the meantime, it's all goals and selfies and selfies and goals for Frank Lampard.
