After the pomp and circumstance of the Derek Jeter send-off Thursday night at Yankee Stadium, there was some question about whether Jeter would play this weekend against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway or if he'd just let his final homestand be the end.
Even in the aftermath of his storybook moment, the dramatic walk-off single that gave the Yankees a 6-5 win over the Orioles, Jeter was still asked whether he'd play this weekend.
His answer: Yes and no.
Jeter announced following the game Thursday that he had played his final game at shortstop. But he will play in Boston, presumably as a DH. Jeter told MLB Network's Tom Verducci he wanted to play, "out of respect to the Boston fans." Then In the post-game press conference, Jeter explained further:
"I've only played shortstop my entire career and the last game I wanted to play there is tonight."
Jeter's rationale? He wants the view from his final game at Yankee Stadium to be his memento.
"I want to take something from Yankee Stadium and the view from shortstop tonight is what I want to take."
Can't blame him for that, plus the Yankees have nothing to play for at this point. They're not making the postseason, so that means Jeter has already written the most perfect possible ending.
