It's been kind of a while since we've caught up with JaVale McGee; that can happen when a player's been sidelined for nearly nine months after suffering what wound up being a season-ending stress fracture in his left leg. So what has the Denver Nuggets 7-foot shot-blocker been up to when he hasn't been either dreaming of dunks or rehabbing in preparation for a return this fall?
The usual, mostly. Hanging out with friends, talking about the importance of jug-based hydration, manually retweeeting himself (which is not a euphemism) ... oh, and he's also taken some time to put on a Leonardo costume and appear in a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-themed music video.
The clip — produced for Funny or Die by actor/comedian Lamorne Morris (best known for playing Winston on FOX's well-regarded sitcom "New Girl") — features some, shall we say, alternate visuals for "Shell Shocked," the Wiz Khalifa x Juicy J track serving as the promotional theme for the forthcoming "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie. Head's up: The video clip features some imagery that may or may not be everyone's favorite — simulated smoking, mostly — so viewer discretion is advised:
My first three thoughts upon watching this:
1. Kind of messed up that you didn't call Al Harrington up for this, JaVale. The Internet's been casting him for this specific video for something like a decade now.
2. JaVale's a lot taller than his brothers. (So tall, in fact, that he has to just wear regular pants.)
3. JaVale's level of engagement — both in terms of swordplay and rapping, when the camera's close to him — is appropriately (and gleefully) low.
Delightful business, Mr. McGee. I guess we shouldn't be surprised that you were on-board for some TMNT cosplay. After all, you're into ninjas:
... and into, if not turtles, then at least their shells as deployed strategically in "Mario Kart":
... and, perhaps most crucially, into pizza (albeit only the tiniest of 'zas):
We just needed to put all the pieces together, like at the end of "The Usual Suspects."
...
I think I know which movie-related video I want to see JaVale in next.
Hat-tip to former boss Trey Kerby of The Starters.
