On the way to reaching the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time ever, Costa Rica has made a lot of new fans and those new fans are buying up shirts faster than the team's kitmaker can produce them. Los Ticos shirt sales have increased 20 times over during this tournament with more than 50,000 sold since Costa Rica beat Uruguay to start its campaign.
nearly sold out of Costa Rica's home and away shirts, which are made by Italian sportswear firm Lotto.
FIFA's official online shop isFrom Reuters:
"We are now having trouble organising some fast production to let everyone have this shirt that will become a memory of a historic achievement," Lotto President Andrea Tomat told Reuters in an interview.
Out of 32 teams at this World Cup, Costa Rica is one of just five not to have their shirts made by Nike, Adidas or Puma.
In addition to a large number of club teams, Lotto also makes kits for seven other national teams: Panama, Brunei, Syria, Myanmar, the Cook Islands, Kiribati, and Samoa. So this kind of World Cup success is just as unique (if not moreso) for Lotto as it is for Costa Rica.
