NBA draftee Andrew Wiggins is sporting a striking blazer on draft night

In a lot of ways, considering the ages of many of the participants, the NBA draft works as a sort of prom-setting for the draftees in attendance. For the players in the green room, waiting to shake the NBA commissioner’s hand, it’s a chance to dig into their first anticipated NBA paycheck on a suit that works as both a bit of a fashion statement, and the recognition that these are young men working with a sense of humor. It’s a fun night, so why not let one’s outfit reflect that?

This would explain potential top overall pick Andrew Wiggins’ choice for Thursday night:

Wiggins’ choice was cut together by stylist Brandon Williams and tailor Waraire Boswell, according to Women’s Wear Daily, who documented the buildup to his choice to wear in Brooklyn on draft night:

“I wanted to set him apart from the past and other drafts,” Boswell said. “Generally, on draft day, all of these guys will have these suits from a handful of suit clothiers or have their local tailors do that for them — we wanted him to look like he’s already been there, done that and he’s at the pinnacle. Whoever sees him is going to be like, ‘Oh wow, this guy dresses like this all the time.’”

Boswell collaborated with Williams to find the perfect fabric for the blazer, working with one of Boswell’s fabric vendors to choose the white rose print, usually only for European royalty.

“It’s superexclusive and we were told it was for when royals vacation or go to a country club. It’s a European bird’s-eye fabric. I guarantee no one will have anything even close to what he’s wearing.”

This is a 19-year old, about to become a millionaire, having fun. Let the young man goof around, on a night he’ll never forget.

Because this is 2014, a behind the scenes Vine was de rigueur:
