The USA’s World Cup journey came to what seems like a sadly premature end Tuesday, as the USMNT fell 2-1 to Belgium in extra time. Reactions to the USA’s elimination ranged from shock and surprise to anger at referee decisions that didn’t seem to go America’s way.
Overall however, there seems to be a prevailing feeling of pride. The U.S. team, drawn into the “Group of Death” along with Germany, Portugal and Ghana, was never expected to progress beyond the initial stage of this summer’s World Cup. However the Yanks surprised everyone by beating their bogey team, Ghana in their opening match and tying Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in their second.
Although they lost their third group stage match to Germany, they kept the scoreline respectable at 1-0 and were able to make it out of the group on goal difference.
Tuesday’s round of 16 clash against Belgium looked challenging but winnable. For 90 minutes plus, the U.S. kept the Belgians off the scoreboard, forcing the match into extra time. However a late collapse saw them surrender two goals in the first period of extra time.
A late goal from Julian Green spawned a U.S. rally but there was simply no getting past a Belgian side whose quality far surpassed that of the U.S.
We take a look now at some of the headlines around the nation and the reactions to the U.S. elimination. Despite the disappointment of falling out in the second round for the second consecutive World Cup, the U.S. displayed hopeful signs in Brazil, hope that’s reflected in many of the headlines surrounding the loss.
