Donte Whitner: Browns locker room split 50-50 between Manziel, Hoyer

Another day, another poll on where Johnny Manziel sits on the Cleveland Browns' quarterback totem pole. Except this one comes from inside the team's locker room.

Donte Whitner, the team's free-agent addition at safety, told The MMQB's Peter King that the team is split on who will start.

It's a bit of a confusing tweet, as we don't know if Whitner is predicting who will start Week 1, long term or what. And did he go around and crowd-source the locker room, rookies included?

There's little science to these things, naturally, and it's more of a feel of the locker room thing for a veteran such as Whitner. We still don't know which quarterback will start Monday against the Washington Redskins, or who, if either, leads the race at this point.

Head coach Mike Pettine has yet to name next Monday's starter, but you'd have to think it's Manziel's turn in the rotation with the first-team offense — if this is a true battle, that would make sense. Neither one blew us away on Saturday, but Manziel had a few flash plays and didn't look out of place against the Detroit Lions.

Pettine has said he'd like to name a starter "well in advance" of the third week of the preseason, which means we might have an answer to this seemingly endless debate in a little over a week.

Some of you are thankful for this news, it would appear.
