NASCAR Hall of Fame lost $1.4 million last fiscal year, down from previous year

The NASCAR Hall of Fame continues to post losses.

The Hall of Fame, located in Charlotte, N.C., posted a loss of $1.4 million for the fiscal year ending on June 30 according to the Charlotte Business Journal. The losses were $1.6 million for the previous year.

Officials from the NASCAR Hall of Fame said attendance at the museum, which opened in 2010, has stabilized.

From the CBJ:

Between July 2013 and June 2014, a total of 169,724 people visited the hall of fame, the visitors authority said. Those figures are for paid admissions only. The previous year, 178,838 people visited, but the difference of 7,100 is attributed to private events staged during the 2012 Democratic National Convention, which was included in fiscal 2013 (July 2012-June 2013).

When the Hall of Fame opened in 2010, it had some incredibly lofty attendance goals, especially based off the attendance levels of the past two years. The original goal was 850,000 people and was moved all the way down to 350,00 people.

Are the operating deficits sustainable? That's the, pardon the pun, million-dollar question. You may have noticed that NASCAR has been holding a lot of events at the Hall recently as an effort to bring it more visibility.

"We still have long-term work going on how to solve for the current reality of the performance of the hall versus what it was expected to do originally," Charlotte visitors authority CEO Tom Murray said.
