Houston Texans make a change at quarterback, benching Ryan Fitzpatrick

(AP) After Sunday's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, when Houston Texans coach Bill O'Brien refused to endorse Ryan Fitzpatrick as his starting quarterback, it was pretty clear that a quarterback change was probable.

O'Brien made the move official on Wednesday, telling the media that former New England Patriots backup Ryan Mallett will be the starter in Week 11 when the team returns from its bye.

Mallett tweeted (and deleted) that he was ready, and now he gets his chance.

"I might be wrong, but I think this might be the thing that helps our team," O'Brien said.

Mallett in in his fourth season, and has never gotten much of an opportunity to play. As Brady's backup, he never started a game. He has appeared in just five NFL games, with four passing attempts. His career statistics: 1-for-4, 17 yards, one interception. So we really don't know how he'll do the rest of the season.

But, like all Brady backups, his legend has grown as he has sat on the bench. The Texans shipped a sixth-round pick to New England in August for Mallett, who has been in trade rumors for a while simply because he's Brady's backup. This is his chance to shine, and he's excited, via Deepi Sidhu of the Texans Radio Network:

The Texans are 4-5 and needed a jump start. Fitzpatrick wasn't terrible, with 11 touchdowns, eight interceptions and an 87.1 rating, but the Texans didn't appear to be a playoff team with him. Maybe they won't be with Mallett either, but O'Brien is ready to find out.
