Cardinals, Carson Palmer agree to 3-year deal worth reported $50M

The Arizona Cardinals and quarterback Carson Palmer have agreed on a three-year contract extension, the team announced on Friday.

Palmer has found a home in the desert with the Cardinals, and a coach in Bruce Arians whose vertical offense is a match for his skill set.

There had been a bit of doubt entering the season about Palmer's long-term place with the team, but after starting out with a 5-0 record (and an 11-2 TD-INT ratio) this season it's clear that it's a marriage that is beneficial to continue for both parties.

Palmer turns 35 in December, and he will be 37 at the end of the deal, which is for a reported $50 million, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Although further details have yet to surface on the contract, it's clear that at an average per year of nearly $17 million, the Cardinals view Palmer as a franchise quarterback who will give them a chance to win a Super Bowl over the next few seasons, and not just this one. (Oh, by the way, the Cardinals are 7-1, the best record in the NFL, and will host the Super Bowl this coming February.)

After leaving the Cincinnati Bengals on bad terms following the 2010 season (after spending his first eight years there), and bottoming out for two seasons with the Oakland Raiders, who overpaid to trade for Palmer, he came to the Cardinals on the cheap — for a seventh-round pick — and has been a superior bargain in those terms.

Yes, the new contract means the Cardinals are heavily committed to Palmer, but they believe he remains in his prime and has the capability of being their franchise fixture over the next few seasons.
