Brett Favre was the third QB choice for 'There's Something About Mary'

If you're of a certain age, you can't even say Brett Favre's name without consciously avoiding calling him "Brett Fav-ruh," as per his cameo in the '90s comedy classic "There's Something About Mary." Ben Stiller, for this among so much else, we blame you:

Anyway, Favre's cameo was a bit of sports-Hollywood crossover genius, executed with perfect secrecy long before the Internet was spoiling every single element of every single movie. (Oh, and if you're too young to remember "Mary," please, go get educated and come on back.) Favre may have run around on the field like he was a little kid, but in front of the cameras, he exhibited all the grace of a tackling dummy, but with less acting range:

Speaking to the NFL Network's Rich Eisen, Peter and Bobby Farrelly, who directed "Mary," revealed to Favre and the world a secret: Brett wasn't the first choice for the surprise cameo.

No, at the tops of the brothers' list was then-Patriots QB Drew Bledsoe. Unfortunately, Bledsoe had just injured a woman in a mosh pit at an Everclear concert, and worried about how that might look, jetting off to do a movie after that. (Youngsters: look up "Everclear," and don't judge us too harshly.) Next up was Steve Young, but he expressed concern about children seeing him in an R-rated movie. (And boy, was this R-rated. We can't even summarize some of it for you on a family website.)

The cameo didn't exactly launch Favre into the Hollywood elite, but it made a good movie even better. Or dumber. Whichever. Both work.
