The Philadelphia 76ers have been busy one day before the start of the 2014-15 NBA season, adding veteran forward Travis Outlaw from the New York Knicks in a deal for big man Arnett Moultrie on Monday. While analysis of the deal would figure to center on Outlaw's fit as a bench scorer, Sixers general manager Sam Hinkie is not one to assemble his team with an eye towards what occurs on the court. According to ESPN.com's Marc Stein, the tanking-minded Hinkie plans to waive Outlaw and appears to have orchestrated the deal to add a future second-round pick. As usual, the Sixers are looking towards the future.
However, focusing on the road ahead seems to have sent the Sixers back to the fairly recent past. When it came time to add Outlaw to the official roster at Sixers.com, the team ended up with Charles "Bo" Outlaw, a 14-season NBA veteran who last suited up in 2007. Take a look (via SB Nation):
This error was likely an honest mistake, in that assigning players to official rosters must involve clicking a few buttons on a form. It's embarrassing, sure, but also somewhat understandable. It was corrected soon after, with the correct Outlaw making a brief appearance before being released.
Regardless, it's hard to imagine a better manifestation of the Sixers' disregard for their performance on the court. With a roster that features such relative unknowns as JaKarr Sampson, Malcolm Thomas, and Henry Sims, getting a player's identity exactly correct doesn't seem like the biggest issue in the world. Philly is playing for draft position and little else.
We will see if Sixers.com sees similar errors over the course of the season. We are just one keystroke away from turning guard KJ McDaniels into St. Louis Rams safety TJ McDonald.
