The New York Knicks didn't have a slot on the NBA's debut dance card, but star forward Carmelo Anthony still made his presence felt on opening night. Sure, it was a leering, creepy, disquieting presence in the background of a scene on a gritty FX drama, but still: presence felt!

Yep, that was Anthony — whose prior credits include episodes of NBC's "Law and Order: SVU" and Showtime's "Nurse Jackie", as well as the Chinese feature film "Amazing" — showing up to say, "We got a call," and hand over a knife as "Cartwright Soldier" in Tuesday's episode of "Sons of Anarchy." If you did not catch the episode and would like to learn more about what transpired in it, Yahoo TV has a recap here, as well as a write-up from our partners at HitFix, but don't click if you don't want anything spoiled. (You already knew that. This is the Internet in 2014.)
I've never watched an episode of "Sons of Anarchy" before — it's on the "binge-watch during the summer" list, but that's a loooooooong list, and it's not very high up — so I had to do some searching to figure out the specific context for 'Melo's game of knifey-spoony. From what I've been able to gather, the man to whom 'Melo handed the blade — Moses Cartwright, from whom Anthony's character gets his soldierin' name — didn't use it to chop celery for soup. At least no volume-shooting forwards were harmed in the making of this gruesome biker thriller. It's just a shame that Anthony wasn't wearing a distinctive chapeau during his cameo; a crisp, tasteful beret really would have given "Cartwright Soldier" a new level of depth and shading.
The appearance, of course, brought out all sorts of Knicks-hatin' and Knicks-fan-self-loathin' jokes, with this one taking the cake from my perspective:
Anthony will be in a much more familiar televised setting on Wednesday, when the newly shape-based Knicks tip off the 2014-15 campaign at Madison Square Garden. With the Knicks looking spotty on both sides of the ball in preseason under new head coach Derek Fisher and Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, Pau Gasol and the revamped Chicago Bulls coming to town, though, things could get ugly at MSG. Probably not "chopped up SAMCRO" ugly, but still the sort of thing intended solely for mature audiences. Viewer discretion, as always, is advised.
Hat-tip to Joe Flynn at Posting and Toasting.
