Confusion in the Tigers outfield gives Lorenzo Cain inside-the-park homer

This one won't make the 2014 Detroit Tigers highlight reel.

Tigers outfielders Don Kelly and Torii Hunter ran into each other in the seventh inning Monday when Lorenzo Cain of the Kansas City Royals hit a fly ball to right-center field. In the aftermath, Kelly ran over to Hunter, because he thought the ball was in Hunter's glove.

It wasn't. In fact, it had ricocheted in the opposite direction. Oops.

Cain kept running, because that's what you do when nobody knows where the baseball is. He came all the way around for an inside-the-park homer. Chris Iott of MLive.com explains what happened from Kelly's perspective:

Hunter was down for a while after the collision, but he stayed in the game. He actually doubled and scored the following inning, one of his three hits that helped the Tigers to a 9-5 win.

Aside from the outfield confusion, things went pretty well for the Tigers in Game 1 of their big series with the Royals. Justin Verlander pitched seven innings. The offense pounded out 15 hits. Victor Martinez had two. Miguel Cabrera had three. Most importantly, the Tigers gained a game in the standings from the AL-Central leading Royals.

The Tigers now trail the Royals by one game in the division.
