West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen: 'You lie in recruiting'

Dana Holgorsen addressed the media following practice on Monday and unintentionally made national headlines.

Holgorsen was asked about recruiting and went into a spiel about how he intended to recruit this season. And then he made this comment:

“I know you lie in recruiting a bunch, and that’s just part of it,” he said.

Wait, what?

Did Holgorsen just admit to lying to recruits? OK, we’re not naïve enough to think that there isn’t some truth stretching in recruiting and there’s definitely some mud slinging, but openly admitting that you lie to recruits during the recruiting process doesn’t seem like the best way to attract more recruits.

Holgerson continued by saying his goal and the goal of his staff is to get recruits on campus and allow his players to take over from there.

“What are we actually doing? What are we actually feeding these guys? Our job is to get guys on campus,” Holgorsen said. “Once they’re on campus, our players do a lot of recruiting. They spend a lot of time with the recruits, and I encourage them to tell the truth about what we give them and how we treat them.”

Hopefully, Holgorsen is keeping his hosts to players that play, love the coaching staff and love Morgantown otherwise this could totally backfire.

But it’s hard to fault Holgorsen’s methods. West Virginia currently has the 21st-ranked recruiting class in the country, according to Rivals.com, and that class includes four four-star commits.

It will be interesting to see if Holgorsen stays around to see that class through. The Mountaineers are 11-14 in their two seasons in the Big 12, including a 4-8 record last season. Another tough campaign could spell trouble for Holgorsen, who started his head-coaching career with a 10-3 record, which included an Orange Bowl win, during West Virginia’s final year in the Big East.

And don’t think coaches won’t use Holgorsen’s aforementioned recruiting comments against him to change the makeup of that 21st-ranked class.
