Disappointment afflicts everyone at certain points of their life, but in recent years it seems to have developed an infatuation with Steven Gerrard.
Man City's 3-1 win over Liverpool prompted Gerrard to assume a now familiar position: hands on his hips with all his weight on one foot as waves of sadness roll off his body, drowning all who gaze upon him in empathy (or perverse enjoyment, if that's what you're into). This is the Liverpool captain's default "patiently waiting for the world to disintegrate" stance and he has employed it time and time again throughout his brilliant career.
After England's 2-1 loss to Uruguay at the World Cup.
After Liverpool squandered a 3-0 lead over Crystal Palace in the final 10 minutes of a title deciding match last season.
After Willian gave Chelsea a 2-0 lead in a match remembered for Gerrard's infamous slip.
After the second goal in a 2-0 loss at Arsenal (with his teammates imitating him).
During a 2-0 loss to West Brom in February 2013.
After a 2-1 loss to Man United in January 2013.
After losing the 2012 FA Cup final to Chelsea.
After losing to Wigan, March 2012.
During a loss to France in a November 2010 friendly.
During a loss to Man City, August 2010.
After getting eliminated from the 2010 World Cup by Germany.
After losing a Euro 2008 qualifier to Croatia.
After losing the 2007 Champions League final.
After losing to France to begin Euro 2004.
Steven Gerrard's entire career hasn't been continuous dejected hip holding, though. Sometimes he holds other things after a match. Like the Champions League trophy.
So what's the point of all this? To be honest, I haven't decided yet. But after taking this journey together, we might have learned something about Steven Gerrard and definitely learned a lot about each other.
