Roddy White finally pays up on NCAA Tournament Twitter bet

Say what you will about Falcons receiver Roddy White, but he does indeed cash the checks his mouth writes.

Back during the 2014 NCAA Tournament, which seems like it happened a decade ago, White got a bit mouthy about Duke's chances in the first round against upstart Mercer. (Who? Exactly.) This was the fateful tweet:

Yeah, well ... guess what happened. Third-seeded Duke lost to 14th-seeded Mercer in one of the NCAA Tournament's greatest-ever upsets.

Twitter fans immediately pounced, hammering White to pay up on his bet. White eventually tried to strike a deal: “I lost a bet and I will give him tickets to the Bears game since he is a Bears fan done with this bet,” he tweeted.

But as it turned out, White did a whole lot more than that for Dylan Hoyt, the 20-year-old fan who made the bet. White got Hoyt two Falcons season tickets, two tickets to the Super Bowl, sideline passes to a Falcons home game, and a visit to the Falcons' training camp as White's VIP guest.

On Wednesday, Hoyt arrived in camp, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Jeff Schultz caught up with him.

“Honestly, I didn’t think Mercer was gonna win,” Hoyt told Schultz. “I just thought, why be that fan who just wants to get free stuff? I didn’t want to be that guy. I was cool with nothing. Next thing you know everybody just jumped on his case."

“I just thank everybody out there in the media for everything they did, for holding me responsible for my actions," White said on Wednesday, and you can probably guess the tone of voice in which he spoke. "I think it’s great. And people on Twitter, I love you all.”
