Northern Illinois to wear jerseys with a corn pattern for season-opener (Photo)

A college team is going to wear corn-themed jerseys in 2014 and no, it's not the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Northern Illinois will wear jerseys with corn patterns on the shoulders for its game against Presbyterian on August 28. The jerseys will be in honor of the DeKalb (Ill.) Corn Fest, which is a free music festival running over the Labor Day weekend.

After the game, the jerseys will be auctioned off to benefit a boy scout troop, the Voluntary Action Center of DeKalb and a family whose son was born with pulmonary atresia and has already had 34 surgeries.

“Partnering with the community is always important, so when Lisa Angel and her group at Corn Fest brought us this opportunity, we couldn’t say no,” Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey said in a statement. “They introduced us to the Canaday family and just knowing their story, I couldn’t think of a better family and cause. Mark and Christopher will be our honorary captains for this game and we’ll be honored to have them with us.

“Then you talk about the Voluntary Action Center and the Boy Scouts. Groups like these are what make our community tick. They do so much for other people in this community and for Corn Fest, and we are just trying to do our part to be good partners and good citizens.”

Aesthetically the jerseys are, well, they're something. Though given that yellow goes together with both red and black, NIU's primary colors, the jerseys could look a whole lot worse. And they bring some attention to NIU's opener.

The game is on Thursday night against an FCS team and will get overshadowed by Texas A&M-South Carolina, Boise State-Ole Miss and others. Heck, if it wasn't for these jerseys, would you even know Northern Illinois was opening the season against Presbyterian on a Thursday?
