Jets QB Matt Simms imitates Victor Cruz's salsa dance, terribly

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – "Dancing with the Stars" is likely not in the future of New York Jets third-string quarterback Matt Simms.

After a fourth-quarter touchdown pass in a preseason game against the Giants, Simms engaged in a brief salsa dance, mocking the touchdown celebration of Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz. On the replay, the official in front of Simms tried holding it together for a moment, then bowed his head as he cracked up laughing.

You don't see officials often laugh on the field. It was that bad.

“The ref just looked at me and started shaking his head, he was like 'C'mon man, really?' So, I couldn't help it, was like 'Sorry' and kept walking by,” Simms said.

Simms insisted it wasn't a dig at Cruz.

“Not at all, I was just having some fun, nothing personal. I actually worked out with Victor in the offseason this year. I know him personally,” Simms said. “I didn't take a jab at him or anything like that. I was just having some fun with something that everyone knows in the stadium.”

He told the quarterback group earlier this week that he might bust out with the dance move if he threw a touchdown.

The dance-step, which looked a bit more like a tango than a salsa, is a bit of an odd move for the younger Simms. After all, his father Phil was a Super Bowl winner with the Giants and a legend in an organization that prides itself on being old school and traditional.

Jets fans loved it on Twitter, however, naming him to everything from the 53-man roster to the team's "Ring of Honor."

The good news for Simms is that his touchdown pass appears to have distanced himself from Tajh Boyd in the competition for the third quarterback slot on the Jets roster. The Jets took Boyd in the sixth round but he has been horrible in training camp thus far.

Now that's something worth dancing about, but perhaps a waltz is a safer bet in the future.

“I was excited, spur of the moment,” Simms said. “I don't know – just pulled it out and started dancing.”
