The only reason the Blaine Gabbert-to-49ers trade made any sense is that you had to give San Francisco the benefit of the doubt. The 49ers are one of the best-run organizations in football, with one of the deepest rosters in the NFL, must have seen something in him to give a sixth-round pick for the former Jaguars first-round bust.
Well, after Thursday night's 49ers preseason opener, Jacksonville must have been having a good laugh. They have to feel pretty good about getting a sixth-rounder for Gabbert.
Gabbert was not good for the 49ers in relief of Colin Kaepernick. Gabbert was 3-of-11 for 20 yards, a robust 1.8 yards per attempt. Kaepernick threw one pass and had 17 yards. Gabbert threw an interception in which he stared down his receiver. Josh Johnson took over in the third quarter. Johnson immediately lost a fumble, so the 49ers have to be feeling confident about their depth behind Kaepernick after the preseason opener.

During the second half of the 49ers-Ravens game, "Blaine Gabbert" was the top trending topic on Twitter, and it's not because a lot of people were reminiscing about his Missouri days. Shutdown Corner's own Eric Edholm summed up the reaction of the masses:
The 49ers talked up the former first-round pick of the Jaguars, who has a 66.4 career rating. And, after all, Gabbert was once considered highly enough that he was the 10th overall pick of the 2011 NFL draft. So it seemed at least possible that Jim Harbaugh and the 49ers could turn him into a good backup.
Based on the results of the first preseason game, the 49ers better see more out of Gabbert before the regular season starts. Or perhaps Gabbert won't be their backup after all.
Stay healthy, Colin.
