St. Bonaventure guard sinks his second buzzer beater this week

Many college basketball players go their entire career without sinking a game-winning shot at the buzzer.

Marcus Posley has done it twice in four days.

The St. Bonaventure guard followed up his length-of-the-floor dash to beat Davidson on Wednesday night with more last-second heroics Saturday afternoon against VCU.

With the score tied and the Bonnies holding for the game's last shot, Posley used a high screen to force VCU to switch 250-pound Mo Alie-Cox onto him and then attacked the big man the dribble. Posley's acrobatic layup high off the glass gave St. Bonaventure a 73-71 victory over the Atlantic 10's first-place team and inspired a frantic court storming from Bonnies fans.

Back-to-back game winners from Posley are just two of the highlights from his spectacular junior season. The transfer from junior college power Indian Hills Community College is averaging a team-high 17.2 points per game and has spearheaded St. Bonaventure's rise into the upper half of the increasingly wide open Atlantic 10.

VCU appeared to have a stranglehold on the league until defensive dynamo Briante Weber blew out his knee last Saturday and leading scorer Treveon Graham reinjured his left ankle Wednesday against George Mason. Both could only watch as the Rams staged a furious rally from a 10-point second-half deficit and tied the game on a Jordan Burgess basket with 16.5 seconds to go only to lose a few seconds later.

While Terry Larrier, JeQuan Lewis and Melvin Johnson did their best to carry shorthanded VCU offensively, the absence of both Graham and Weber is a lot to overcome. The Rams (18-5, 8-2) still lead the Atlantic 10, but now five teams are within two games of them with a month still left to play.

One of them is St. Bonaventure, and the biggest reason why is Posley. Twice this week, St. Bonaventure coach Mark Schmidt has put the ball in his hands with the game on the line and twice Posley has delivered.
