Western Michigan players trashed Idaho locker room, cooked marketing poster in microwave

Western Michigan had a little too much fun in the locker room after it beat Idaho on the road on September 13.

According to the Associated Press, WMU players “knocked some locker room sinks loose, broke a trophy and caused other damage” during a victory celebration after a 45-33 win – its first of the season. There was so much damage that Idaho athletic director Rob Spear was compelled to bill Western Michigan $500 “for cleanup and repair costs.”

Spear, in an email to WMU athletic director Kathy Beauregard, said that the Broncos used locker rooms that are used by Idaho’s track and field team. There was team memorabilia in the locker room and Spear wrote that “a championship track and field plaque was broken and a signed marketing poster from the winning track and field team was torn off the wall and cooked in a microwave along with other items.”

Yes, you read that right. A marketing poster was cooked in a microwave. (Why is there a microwave in the locker room, anyway?)

Additionally, Spear’s email – which the AP obtained through a public records request – revealed that “a ceiling tile was broken, items were destroyed and stolen from lockers, one locker was written on and trash – including food wrappers, cups and banana peels – were strewn across the floor along with dirty towels.”

That’s not a good look for Western Michigan and Beauregard apologized in a response to Spear.

"Again we do apologize and if it helps at all we have implemented new policies to make sure we never put any team we play in this situation again," Beauregard’s email said.
