Roy Hodgson is excited about Wayne Rooney converting a penalty against an accountant

England got off to a bit of a slow start in their Euro 2016 qualifier against San Marino. It took 24 agonizing minutes to score their first goal against the microstate ranked dead last in FIFA's world rankings. San Marino's admirably tight defending had England in danger of taking an embarrassingly narrow lead into the halftime break, but then captain Wayne Rooney stepped up to the penalty spot and converted a penalty to make it 2-0 in the 43rd minute. And Roy Hodgson reacted as if he just watched Bruce Willis defuse a bomb.

Nevermind the fact that San Marino's goalkeeper is an accountant by profession and Wayne Rooney is one of the highest paid footballers in the world. Hodgson knows that with England, every goal is a victory. Even those scored against poor San Marino.

Danny Welbeck went on to add a third goal just after halftime, Andros Townsend made it 4-0 and a San Marino defender deflected in a Rooney shot for the fifth. If England score a sixth, Hodgson might tear his shirt off and do a knee slide down the touchline.
