Michigan State AD Mark Hollis disappointed by student section attendance

Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis was disappointed with student attendance during the Spartans’ 27-22 win over Nebraska. It was a nationally televised game and large gaps of empty seats were shown throughout the broadcast Saturday night.

Hollis expressed his embarrassment on Twitter.

Saturday night’s game was one of the more anticipated Big Ten games of the season thus far, but amid rainy conditions with temperatures in the 40s, attendance was nowhere near the 13,000 season tickets purchased by students for this year’s home games.

The Spartans built a 27-3 lead midway through the second half and fans began to file out, thinking the game was in hand. Though Nebraska’s comeback effort fell short, the Huskers were able to operate throughout the fourth quarter without much crowd noise to deal with.

“We needed it to be loud there, and it’s a big football game, and it got a little empty there at the end,” head coach Mark Dantonio said Saturday night.

Michigan State, now 4-1 and ranked eighth in the country, currently boasts an 11-game home winning streak that goes back to November 2012. Its next home game comes against in-state rival Michigan on October 25. I’d be willing to bet we see a full stadium for that one.
