Minnesota Timberwolves rookie guard Zach LaVine earned big attention this offseason for his incredible vertical leap and dunking ability. It's as yet unclear how the 19-year-old UCLA product will take to running an NBA offense, but he already seems like a shoo-in for the dunk contest at All-Star Weekend in New York this February. It's worth any chance to watch LaVine jump, even if it's just in the pre-game lay-up lines.
LaVine gave early-coming fans a bit of a show in the run-up to Tuesday's preseason game against the Indiana Pacers at Bankers Life Fieldhouse with a pretty windmill during warmups. Journeyman center Kyrylo Fesenko, a very different kind of player, tried to recreate the play soon after. It didn't go so well (via SB Nation):
This clip was uploaded by the team's PR staff, which maybe doesn't bode well for Fesenko as he attempts to earn a roster spot so he can bring his family over from conflict-stricken Ukraine. On the other hand, it's likely Fesenko was the first to laugh about the situation. He's well known for having a terrific sense of humor and for all we know might have even told this cameraman to watch out for his LaVine-esque slam.
While the two could not have been more different in the layup line, both players failed to impress in the Wolves' eventual 103-90 loss to Indiana. LaVine finished with five points on 2-of-9 shooting and five turnovers in 25 minutes, and Fesenko missed his only shot attempt, grabbed one rebound, and registered a steal in a brief three minutes of play.
