Greg Ward sparked Houston's moribund offense Thursday night against Central Florida. He just came up a bit short on the Cougars' potential game-winning drive.
Ward, a wide receiver who is also Houston's backup quarterback, came in for an ineffective John O'Korn and dove for the end zone late in the fourth quarter on a quarterback scramble.
He lost the ball before he got to the goal line. The ball trickled out of the end zone with 24 seconds left and UCF won 17-12.
Here's how close it was.
O'Korn was 12-26 for 98 yards passing and two interceptions. He was pulled after his second interception, which came in the third quarter, and Ward assumed the primary QB duties. Though "sparking" may not necessarily be the best descriptor. With Ward at QB, Houston managed two field goals.
Ward finished the game 10-17 passing for 116 yards, and, despite the fumble, undoubtedly sparking discussions about who should be Houston's starting QB next week.
He also had one catch for 36 yards.
UCF won because it was able to connect on a big play. After leading 7-6 at halftime, QB Justin Holman found Breshad Perriman for a 52-yard TD and a 14-6 lead.
Holman's stat line to end the game wasn't pretty either. He finished 6-18 for 101 yards and two TDs.
