Argentina and Nigeria make World Cup history with quick goals

While Neymar has been grabbing headlines as homeside Brazil’s cruised through to the Round of 16, Lionel Messi has been making sure his name is not forgotten. Having scored both of Argentina’s winning goals through two matches, La Albiceleste’s no. 10 got his side off to a quick start against Nigeria on Wednesday in the third minute:

The goal was Messi’s third in three games and comes one day after his 27th birthday.

The Argentinian celebrations wouldn’t last very long, however. Just over 80 seconds after Messi opened the scoring, Nigeria answered thanks to a beautiful equalizer from Ahmed Musa:

According to Paul Carr, this was the first time in World Cup history that two teams scored in the opening five minutes of a match. He added that Musa’s goal was the fastest in Nigeria’s World Cup history.
