After Vanderbilt's horrendous game against Temple, coach Derek Mason won't name a starting quarterback for the Commodores' game against Ole Miss on Saturday.
It was a bad night to be a Vanderbilt QB in the 37-7 loss Thursday night. Mason used three quarterbacks and the offense committed six of the Commodores' seven turnovers. Four were
"We need to have consistency," Mason said Tuesday. You go through the process of evaluating and you want to see what you see in practice measure up to what you see on gameday. We don't have the consistency at the position that you'd like but I needed to see all three guys in order to see where we are. What we'll do moving forward is not name a starter and at game time you'll see who's starting at quarterback and then move forward."
As you would guess in a 30-point, three quarterback loss. The statlines for Patton Robinette, Stephen Rivers and Johnny McCrary were not pretty.
• Robinette: 4-6 passing for 38 yards
• Rivers: 12-25 passing for 186 yards and an interception
• McCrary: 0-3 passing with two interceptions
Robinette was named the starter before the game and was sacked three times before he was replaced by Rivers, a transfer from LSU and the brother of San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers, in the second quarter. But in hindsight, his statline looks pretty good. On his third drive of the game, Rivers fumbled and it was returned for a touchdown. McCrary was intercepted on his first pass of the game.
Wednesday, Mason said any presumptions that Rivers would start were inaccurate. It looks like we're going to have to wait until Saturday.
